Hi everyone

Firstly, just the usual request to please spread the word!! Please forward this email to anyone who you think might be interested. If they send an email to keith@jazzupdate.co.uk I will be happy to add them to the mailing list; alternatively they can sign themselves up by going to www.jazzupdate.co.uk.

And of course ... if you have a gig or anything jazz-related that you think the world would benefit from knowing about please pass me on the details and I will be more than happy to add it to the newsletter (in text format which I can copy and paste please, NOT jpgs or similar of flyers). And of course feel free to to come along and leave flyers etc. on the tables at the jam too.

NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. In future I am afraid we will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day but didn't seem that happy that we were wasting his time asking about it! If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.

Jim Mullen Reunion Tour plays Herts Jazz Club on 7.45 pm Sunday 12 February 2012 at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City

Jim Mullen is a multi-award winning guitarist with a unique jazz style and sound, who is regarded as the high priest of the instrument by most young jazz guitarists. His quartet was in existence for six years from 1996 and is one of the most powerful ever to appear on the British jazz scene. The Quartet has recorded five albums and its members have worked with a huge array of musicians worldwide, not just in the jazz world but in just about every other style of music too. Jim Mullen "the man with the thumb" is a truly original voice in contemporary jazz guitar born out, in no small part, of his 15-year association with sax man Dick Morrissey in the rarified jazz-fusion atmosphere of their now legendary band, Morrissey Mullen. Never flashy or glib he is known not only for the tasteful eloquence of his solos, providing thoughtful and absorbing explorations of the carefully chosen material that forms the band's wide-ranging repertoire, but also for what his subtle comping gives to his band's overall sound. Jim Mullen - Guitar, Gareth Williams - Piano, Mick Hutton - Bass, Gary Husband - Drums Tickets: JUST £5 for students and under-21s; £11 online; £13 at the door; £8 members.. Book online at http://www.hawthornetheatre.co.uk/whatsonstage.html

London - January 11 2012. It is announced that online voting is now open for the eighth Parliamentary Jazz Awards which will take place at the House of Commons Terrace Pavilion on Wednesday 16 May 2012. Entries are open to everyone, and forms can be completed on-line from the Jazz Services website at www.jazzservices.org.uk . The final deadline for entries is 11.55 am on Monday 20th February 2012. The Parliamentary Jazz Awards is organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG), and supported by PPL in conjunction with Jazz Services, Jazz UK, Jazzwise, and the Jazz Section of the Musicians' Union.

The nine categories for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2012 are:
Jazz Musician of the Year - Jazz Ensemble of the Year - Live Jazz Award (including venues, promoters, festivals and jazz clubs) - Jazz Journalist of the Year - Jazz CD of the Year (released in 2011 by a UK band or musicians) - Jazz Broadcaster of the Year - Jazz Publication of the Year (inc. magazines, blogs, listings & books) - Jazz Education Award (to an educator or project for raising the standard of jazz education in the UK) - Services to Jazz Award (to a living person for their outstanding contribution to Jazz in the UK).

APPJAG has over 80 members from the House of Commons and House of Lords, across all political parties. Its aim is to encourage a wider and deeper enjoyment of jazz, to increase Parliamentarians understanding of the jazz industry and issues surrounding it, to promote jazz as a musical form, and to raise its profile inside and outside Parliament.

Phil Church of the Belvedere and Keith Neill of Buckhurst Hill Jazz Jam have asked that we support Paul Barnes and vote for him --

"As you are no doubt already aware, Paul Barnes has given our club tremendous support in publicising our gigs on his Late Paul Barnes radio show, broadcast 11pm Saturday nights on BBC Essex and many other BBC radio stations, which has been a significant factor in making The Belvedere one of the most successful and enjoyable jazz clubs in the county. Paul won the Broadcaster of the Year Award last year and it would be a great achievement for him to win it two years running, so with your help in appreciation of all the hard work Paul does in promoting live jazz, please repay him by completing the online form on the Jazz Services website : - http://www.jazzservices.org.uk/index.php/appjag-form-2012 It will only take a few seconds and your support is really appreciated."

Frank Harrison Trio plays Herts Jazz Club at 7.45 pm Sunday 5 February 2012 at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City
Part of a national tour, the trio celebrates the launch of their new album, "Sideways". The music takes inspiration from the classic piano trio tradition, but also shows classical, Latin American and folk influences. Frank Harrison - piano, Davide Petrocca - bass, Stephen Keogh - drums Tickets: JUST £5 for students and under-21s; £11 online; £13 at the door; £8 members.

Frank's most prominent partnership has been the long-term relationship with Gilad Atmon in the Orient House Ensemble. He has, however, run a trio since 2006 which has been well received across Europe. His bass player is the Italian Davide Petrocca, another member of the Global Music Foundation, which Stephen Keogh directs. He trained with Nils-Henning Øersted Pederson in Copenhagen and now lives in Stuttgart. He was a member of Monty Alexander's trio for three years and has played with Jon Faddis and Randy Brecker. Stephen is best known for his work with Peter King but since moving to Barcelona he has become a member of Bill Charlap's European band. He works all over the world with the likes of Brad Meldhau and Steve Grossman.
So this is an exceptional trio which will play a set that mixes new compositions with fresh interpretations of jazz standards and folk music. The music moves from fiery, intense swing to dark, classical-influenced improvisations to open, spacious ballads.

The Hunter Club in 65 Guildhall Street, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3PH would love all music lovers to come and enjoy an evening of music in their comfortable jazz club atmosphere. The music will begin in the main dance hall at 8pm. Licensed bar. Comfortable jazz club atmosphere. To book call (01284) 748280 or visit www.hunterclub.org.uk or 01284 748280. Their performance is guaranteed to be sparkling, full of life and good humour, combined with highly impressive musicianship and a wide range of material, which juxtaposed traditional songs with their own writing. Taking inspiration from their American roots and the country's rich musical heritage, the Spikedrivers' songwriting, vocal harmonies and unique instrumentation will create an atmosphere that will take you on a journey, from southern jukejoints and lazy front porches to the huge open spaces of dust bowls and railroad tracks disappearing into the distance. Don't miss an excellent night's entertainment by a really good tight trio displaying a wealth of variety and interest.

24th February - The Quentin Collins/Brandon Allen Quartet: www.myspace.com/qcbaquartet

Quentin Collins Trumpet, Brandon Allen tenor sax, Ross Stanley Hammond Organ and Enzo Zirilli drums. Trumpeter Quentin Collins and tenor saxophonist Brandon Allen are two of the fieriest young soloists on the UK jazz scene. Both are capable of playing in a number of different musical contexts but as joint leaders of their own quartet they concentrate on their first love Blue Note inspired hard bop and soul jazz with perhaps a hint of the later acid jazz movement thrown in for good measure. The QC/BA Quartet updates the classic Blue Note "organ combo" with the versatile Ross Stanley on Hammond and Enzo Zirilli on drums and have acquired a reputation as a dynamic, hard blowing live act, qualities that are sometimes difficult to capture record. The band's music, categorized as retro hard-bop in the classic Blue Note mold often uses material from the pens of the two leaders. 'Collins plays bright, crackling trumpet and Allen's tenor is declamatory in the grand manner, but there's a restlessness about this band's music that defies expectations. Instead of grooving comfortably along, Enzo Zirilli drums chatter away busily and Ross Stanley on organ produces sudden changes of register and great washes of harmonic colour.' Dave Gelly, The Observer.

9th March - Beth Packer and the Black Cat Bones: www.bethandtheblackcatbones.com - www.myspace.com/bethandtheblackcatbones - www.facebook.com/bethandtheblackcatbones

Beth Packer vocals, Clinton Hough Guitar, Jon Gilles saxophone, Bleddyn Jones bass, Matt Klose drums. Returning to Marigolds after a fantastic gig in 2010, Beth and the Black Cat Bones are a blues, soul and swing band based in London, UK. Formed two years ago they have gone from strength to strength and managed to establish themselves as firmly rooted on the blues gigging circuit in the UK. With regular gigs at venues such as Ain't nothin but the blues, The Blues Kitchen, the Gladstone and trips to Europe playing at venues such as the Brussels Rhythm and Blues Club they are rapidly becoming a renowned and energetic blues band spanning the length of Europe.
They have an impressive repertoire taking classics and lesser known gems from the bare roots of the blues through to 60's soul. With a growing fan base, plenty of energy and a bit of old fashioned grit Beth and The Black Cat Bones will give you a night to remember!

30th March - Peter King and the Brian Dee Trio: http://peterkingjazz.com/bio.html

Peter King, in the words of one critic, "is the finest alto saxophonist that Britain has ever produced, and one of the finest in the world today" (Dave Gelly, 'The Giants Of Jazz', Aurum Press, 1986).
He has been a major influence on the British Jazz scene ever since he played (at the age of eighteen!) at the opening of Ronnie Scott's Club. Peter has played and recorded with far too many famous jazz legends to list here during his career. He has played all over the UK and Europe, Middle East, Russia, Japan, America and was the only non-American artist invited to perform at the Gem Theatre in Kansas City during a week of celebrations in honour of Charlie Parker in March 1999. Peter is a prolific composer and arranger, one of the best known works being "Janus", a BBC commission, featuring his own Quartet and the "Lyric String Quartet". He has appeared in films and on sound tracks. In 1999, Peter played and performed in the Julian Barry play 'Lenny', about the life of Lenny Bruce where he was on stage throughout the play and acted in several small scenes. Directed by Sir Peter Hall and with Eddy Izzard in the title roll of 'Lenny' the play received rave reviews when it opened in London's West End.
Peter is also known for his recorded work with the pop group, 'Everything but the Girl' and as featured soloist and Musical Director of the Charlie Watts Quintet and Tentet.
Brian Dee has performed several times at Marigolds in the past and is one of the UK's leading jazz pianists. He has worked with a list of jazz stars that again is endless but includes recording with Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, Peggy Lee and Fred Astaire. He is still making frequent appearances at Ronnie Scott's and broadcasts regularly on radio with his own trio.

Bass player wanted

Southend Jazz Co-operative needs a bass player! We are a jazz workshop that meets every Saturday morning in St Michaels Church Hall in Leigh-on-Sea from 10 am to 1 pm. There is an average attendance of 20 aspiring jazz players (mostly saxes) with varying experience from beginners to advanced players, but at the very least everybody knows how to follow lead sheets and chords, and jazz etiquette in general, for example playing fours. The focus of the co-op is on the development of improvising skills with an extensive jazz and standards repertoire. The Saturday sessions blend regular tuition with small group playing. A feature of the Co-op are the masterclasses from top professionals, giving the opportunity to play with the great names of British Jazz. Our recent guests have included Andy Cleyndert, Dave Cliff, Alan Barnes, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Waterman and Art Themen. Other sessions are taken by club members.

We have several harmony players, mostly very competent guitarists, and our drummer runs the club, so we always have a full rhythm section - except, now we are looking for a bass player! This is a wonderful opportunity for a bass player to hone skills, learn from the pros, and enjoy a morning's jazz. Please check out the Co-op at the website on www.southendjazzco-op.co.uk. If you are interested give Richard Dray a ring on 01268 781700 for a chat or email him at richard.dray@ymail.com

For those jazz musicians out there looking to hone their skills there are Thursday night workshops run by John Seeley in Leigh-on-Sea. www.johnseeleyjazz.co.uk/Jazz-Workshop.html. All levels welcome, all instruments. At St.Michael and All Angels Church, 62 Leigh Road, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1LF

The aim of the Thursday Night Jazz Workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing. The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level. The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

And finally. Putting my professional hat on for a minute, something which may be interest to some of the musicians on this list who teach music privately. HM Revenue and Customs have announced that they are going to be targeting people who provide private tuition and coaching. They have given people who have failed to pay tax on earnings in the past an "amnesty" until 6th January to notify them that there is tax which should have been paid, and until 31st March to provide the relevant information and make payment of the outstanding tax. If a declaration hasn't been made by 6th January then the full penalties will be payable if the Revenue subsequently discover undeclared income. According to Revenue and Customs: "After 6 January 2012, when the deadline to notify has passed, HMRC will use data from an extensive range of sources to identify those who have failed to come forward and notify their intent to make a full declaration. HMRC uses advanced IT tools such as 'web robot' software which helps identify people who have failed to pay the right tax". Full details are at http://bit.ly/uWCYIx, but if you would like any advice on this matter please do not hesitate to contact me.
