Thursday 29th May - Shakatak. www.shakatak.com
Tickets are now on sale at the Cliffs Pavilion Box Office - £20

It's really fantastic to welcome to the club legendary jazz/funk outfit Shakatak to close off the season in real style! Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music - but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group. Because of the nature of their music, their fan base is one that is far reaching while always retaining an "underground" element. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying both high "cult" status and instant recognition as a household name.

Following ten years touring Europe with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, stints with Chris Dean's Syd Lawrence Orchestra (re-creating the music of Glenn Miller), appearances with the BBC Big Band and Humphrey Lyttelton's band, and two years touring with Bryan Ferry's Roxy Music, Robert is now a busy presence on the mainstream scene. The first thing one notices about his playing is his broad, warm, mellow, juicy tone, which is a perfect fit for his calm, measured phrasing. His sound is influenced by tenor giants Hawkins and Webster, with a swinging vibrancy to compete with the best. If you haven't booked already, I'd like to remind you that this festival promises to be one of the great events of the year. I have uploaded a video featuring over 18 minutes of the artistes who will be appearing. This is mostly from video from last year's festival, but also includes some historic clips of Jackie Free with Wild Bill and Art Hodes and Jim Douglas with Red Allen and the Alex Welsh Band.

All Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards voting forms are now available. The link to the voting form for the nine categories for the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2014 is http://www.jazzservices.org.uk/index.php/parliamentary-jazz-awards/-2014-entry-form

Two years ago you helped Paul Barnes and Mike Pointon win on two categories. It is important that people who represent the traditional / swing end of the jazz spectrum are recognised.
(Paul's latest show is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p002mhdx). We have some fine talented musicians who get very little recognition from the media. Here is a chance to help put that right.
I'm going to ask you to vote for me, if you think I do a good job flying the flag for traditional jazz in the UK.
For the Jazz Venue of the Year (including jazz clubs, venues, festivals and promoters), you may consider one of our festivals at Mundesley, Bracklesham or Stratford as venue of the year or festival of the year. Perhaps, maybe it is St John's Arts Centre at Old Harlow.
As you know, I've put my money where my mouth is (I have more mouth than money) for jazz for over 30 years. You may consider a vote for me for the Services to Jazz Award. Traditional jazz needs extra clout these days and the publicity would give me the opportunity to raise the profile of our music.
The Jazz Media Section really needs to be Paul Barnes at BBC Norfolk. His show is always there at the whim of BBC bosses and is a particular oasis in a sea of sludge that plagues most of the BBC. Cases could also be made for Walter Love's Jazz Club at BBC Ulster or Alyn Shipton's Jazz Record Requests. All three presenters are experts in their field.

Thursday Night Saxophone Workshop

The saxophone workshop aims to develop saxophone technique and performance in a friendly creative environment. The workshop is open to all levels of ability, and every type of saxophone. The workshop is devised for the individual to feel like they are having a private lesson at a fraction of the price. Each class explores saxophone and musicianship skills that will enhance the individual and group performer. This includes looking at music theory, methods of practise, sight reading, improvisation, aural work, and specific concepts to increase your knowledge on the saxophone. This is worked concurrently with a repertoire of saxophone music from different genres of music with a focus on classical and jazz. The pieces are denotated to concentrate on musicianship skills and then performed giving members a feeling of completion. The method of teaching focuses on four principles of learning which are posture, pulse, phonology, and personality. This is used through simultaneous learning techniques that connect aural, visual, improvisation, and rhythm.

Thursday Night Jazz Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to provide a creative and relaxed atmosphere for musicians of all levels, to learn theory aspects of music, and gain practical knowledge of performing.
The music that will be used will range from Hard Bop, Modern to Contemporary Jazz, and will be arranged to a high level.
The teaching of this workshop focuses on the 4 P's Principle. Posture, Pulse, Phonology, and Personality within music. The method of teaching will follow a style called simultaneous learning. The ingredients of pieces are extracted and worked through by connecting areas of learning as aural, visual, rhythm and improvisation. These are then placed back into context, allowing the individual a deep understanding of the piece and its musical principles.

Roger Haywood, the keen Norfolk jazz fan has advised me that he has been invited by the major regional newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press to join their group of reviewers with a special brief to cover jazz, big band, blues and related music. He has asked if clubs and events organisers across the Norfolk coverage area of the paper to add him to their mailing list and advise him of anything suitable that may be coming up. He is happy to consider all genres of jazz, particularly anything that is innovative, original, newsworthy, of national standard or even out of the usual as last year's Norwich Jazz Massive was. Organisers can contact him on rhaywood@issuesmanagers.com. He points out, of course, that there cannot be any guarantee of coverage but anything he would like to review he will put to the EDP's arts editor and an approval from him will mean Roger's review is likely to be used.

Grapevine magazine, the most comprehensive (and free!) events guide in East Anglia, is devoting a monthly double page spread trying to promote jazz to a wider and younger audience. The columnist is well-known jazz journalist, Roger Haywood whose arts reviews for the Eastern Daily Press cover jazz and have brought that specialist music genre into the pages of the paper, probably for the first time on a regular basis. Also, he is now writing the jazz pages for Grapevine events magazine, especially focusing on news and performances across the Eastern Counties. Send any news, opinions or issues that you feel merit a discussion to roger@rogerhaywood.com. His column is separate to the gig guide where copy can be submitted directly to the journal or even inserted online by the promoter directly into their diary at www.grapevinelive.co.uk/Events. These jazz pages look at issues and trends in jazz: topics that he hopes to cover in the coming issues including jazz education, training and teaching (including private jazz tutors), performance opportunities for amateurs including the many jams in the region, music shops, especially those that cover instruments and repairs, plus a feature he wants to do on local big bands, not just who they are but how they work, what they play, where the payers come from and how they fund their existence. Another planned feature where he would like ideas or comments will be on the marketing of jazz especially the many clubs in our region where some are excellent at their promotion and others less so!

For jazz fans there is a new blog which is well worth reading, written by Josh Jennings. The British Jazz Blog aims to celebrate, and give a platform to, the fantastic British jazz scene. Focusing on the contemporary side of the genre, the articles are written in a personal, informal manner, ideal for getting people from outside of the genre just as excited about the music as hardcore fans of jazz! www.britishjazzblog.com

And finally ... NAG TIME! PLEASE NOTE:

1. As mentioned above, please do NOT just send us posters or flyers or a link to a website, as it is too time-consuming for us to then have to re-type all the information. We will not include anything which we cannot copy and paste the text from. Word etc documents are fine, as is just typing the information in the body of an email. If someone does your artwork for you they would normally be more than happy to email you the text to save you re-typing it.

2. Can you please send all future items for inclusion in the newsletter to listings<at>jazzupdate.co.uk please.

3. We have had a couple of instances lately where people unconnected with the night have contacted us to let us know that details of the night have changed or that it has ceased. In fact we even took the trouble to call the promoter of a night to check, who confirmed that it had indeed changed to another day. If you are including your events PLEASE let us know of any changes etc. (you only have to click "reply" when you receive the weekly newsletter). And of course if you are aware of a change or an inaccuracy please let us know - we really do appreciate your input.

4. Please include full address in including postcode for the venue. Most people these days use SatNav, so please make it easier for them. Again, until recently we would Google the address and include the missing information, but it has become too time-consuming to always do this.

5. We always try (when life doesn't get in the way!) to send the newsletter on Friday at lunchtime. Can you get your information to us by 9am Friday morning at the latest to guarantee inclusion please.

Many thanks!
