It is vital if you want to learn to play jazz to get a teacher who is a specialist, rather than just somebody who can teach you to play a few "jazzy" pieces. The following is a list of teachers who both play and teach jazz:

Neale Ridding (01708 731068)

Neale started playing at 8 years of age on flute. He then started studying saxophones at the age of 11, and went on to study piano at 13. At this time he joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). In 1975 Neale appeared in the film “Bugsy Malone”. Since leaving school he has been a professional musician: playing on cruise ships, including the QE2 and Canberra; shows and pantomimes with Marti Caine and Des O’Connor amongst others; radio broadcasts for the BBC; accompanying cabaret artistes such as Bertice Reading and Linda Nolan; and playing with jazz artists including Alan Barnes, Don Rendell, Roy Williams, Janusz Carmello and Pete Jacobson. Neale is regarded as one of the finest jazz flautists around, as well as being a great jazz pianist and saxophonist.

Experienced teacher both in schools and privately, as well as playing regularly with various professional jazz and function bands and working as a session musician. Teaches beginners to advanced, jazz and improvisation, theory, reading etc

Chris's specialism is teaching jazz to students who have already learned the basics of their instruments, but all ages and levels are welcome - he is happy to teach complete beginners, and also teaches the conventional grade syllabuses as well as jazz.

Chris teaches in Theydon Bois, and currently has some slots available on Thursday evenings and Sundays.

Mike has been teaching guitar successfully for twenty-four years, both privately and in music workshops - tutoring students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to professional. His vast experience of live and studio work enables him to offer students a comprehensive understanding of playing and performance and he covers all styles including Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Classical; together with improvisation and music theory.

Lessons are provided at Mike’s home in Loughton where he has a fully equipped professional teaching studio.

Hilary is a classically trained flautist who plays in addition the sax. and clarinet, in all styles. Hilary teaches flute, Sax and clarinet to all levels, music theory for those who feel the urge, and also plays Piano and Bass. Her lessons are largely based on playing and getting the best out of oneself, with performance being an important part of the ethos. If students want to take the ABRSM exams these are available, but not pushed unless the student feels it is required.

Students are encouraged to learn how to sight read, how to get the best from the dots, and how to improvise when that solo comes along. Beginners are welcome, the first lesson is free, and we are happy to look at any prospective purchase of an instrument and give our opinion on it. We do not normally sell instruments, so there won't be the "I just happen to have one here" gambit.

Hils plays in several Big Bands and also plays with various Jazz ensembles. Lessons spaces are limited and taught in her own home in Steeple, Essex.
